LAOS – Expenses & Accommodation

For those who plan to visit Laos one day, this could be useful, similar blogs have helped us work out our budget and accommodation during the planning stages & trip.

0 °C

We spent 19 days in Laos staying in guesthouses or bungalows with a private bathroom most of the time.

We ate out the whole time; and often at the guesthouses’ restaurants. Apparently it is only there that they make money, so we tried to support them that way (plus convenience of course)

The “Transport” part below includes the slow boat, other boat trips on the river, night and day buses, tuk-tuks and motor bike & bicycle rental.

The “Extras” part includes Wat Entrance fees, tubing, internet and other extras.

All amounts are in US dollars

Accommodation:....................................$ 130
Food:.....................................................$ 319
Transport:..............................................$ 271
Extras:...................................................$ 299
TOTAL:...................................................$ 1019

Per day for 2 pax:...................................$ 54

LAOS - ACCOMODATION: 24 August to 12 September 2010

NB: Laos isn’t quite “online” yet so for many places I couldn’t find contact info on the web, but wanted to share the experience/price anyway just in case.

"Saylom Guest House"
Address: Just on the right as you come off the stairs from the boat landing!
Cost: Kip 25,000 per room – Ensuite Bathroom – Fan – No Breakfast – No Wifi
Notes: This is the cheapest price we have found in Laos, don’t get used to it, it was a once off! Plus low season..Cold Water showers, electricity only a few hours every night. Very basic but you wont care as you will be enjoying the surrounding beauty. Don’t forget to charge batteries on everything you need before you go!

"Sokdee Guest House"
Address: Ban Vatnong Khamkong Road, Luang Prabang
Tel: + 856 71 252 555
Email: sokdeeguesthouse@gmail.com
Web: None, they have Travelfish as reference on their card, but not much there.
Cost: Kip 60,000 per room – Ensuite Bathroom – Fan – No Breakfast – Wifi inc
Notes: Nice location, surrounded by boutique hotels mainly, so it was a good find. Its a few parallel streets below the main road in L.P. NB: Sokdee Residence next door is not the same, but we saw the rooms and they were fine too, just no WIFI there.

"Champa Lao Villa"
Address: On the road parallel to the river, go as if you are leaving the centre behind you, go past all the restaurants and you will see it on your right hand side. If you get to Spicylao you have gone too far. (Its dwarfed by a big building just next to it)
Cost: Kip 80,000 per room – Ensuite Bathroom – Fan – Breakfast inc – Wifi inc
Notes: Am gutted that I didn’t think of taking their card, so I have no details. This was a nice guest house. The café area is like sitting in a little forest, with plants hanging everywhere. The room was very comfortable. The owners friendly and courteous. They had a slightly higher priced sister hotel just a few metres away.

"Mixay Paradise"
Address: Francois Nginn road??
Cost: Kip 85,000 per room – Ensuite Bathroom – Fan – Breakfast inc – Wifi
Notes: This is a second Mixay hotel. The original being in Nokeo Koumane street, parallel to this one. Our room was window-less and minute. It did the job for the 2 nights we spent there but it wasn’t great. The problem there is that most budget hotel’s rooms are average, and pricy! Worth allowing for some hotel-searching time there or some advance research..

"Pon’s Guest House"
Address: Near the boat landing, take a right when you get onto land.
Tel: + 856 31 214 037
Cost: Kip 70,000 per room – Ensuite Bathroom – A/C – No Breakfast – No Wifi
Notes: Popular and knows it, we were 2 of maybe 6 tourists on the island and they still refused to bargain much. They basically rather not sell the room than fill it.. We stayed one night then moved next door to Souk Soubay. Nice food at their restaurant though.

"Souk Soubay"
Address: Near the boat landing, take a right when you get onto land, right after Pon’s Guest House.
Tel: + 856 31 214 122
Cost: Kip 40,000 per room – Ensuite Bathroom – Fan – No Breakfast – No Wifi
Notes: Very basic but cheap.

Address: At the boat landing, take a right through a little alleyway and you find them there.
Tel: + 856 30 534 5154
Cost: Kip 40,000 per room – Ensuite Bathroom – Fan – No Breakfast – No Wifi
Notes: Lots of different types of rooms, to suit all budgets.
