CHILE – Expenses & Accomodation

For those who plan to visit Chile one day, this could be useful, similar blogs have helped us work out our budget and accommodation during the planning stages & trip.

We spent 21 days in Chile, staying in hostels in private rooms with either private or shared bathrooms, all had free WiFi. We very rarely ate at restaurants, so made every meal at our hostel as everything is a lot more expensive than anywhere we have been so far.

The “Transport” part below includes one or two private taxis, some shared taxis around Valpariaso, metro and local city buses as well as inter city buses.

The “Extras” part ranged from museum entrances to tips for our guides on certain tours as well as our trips in the Elqui Valley, day tour in San Pedro, Vineyard tours in Santa Cruz and the different activities in Pucon (Volcano hike, raffting, zipline).

All amounts are in US dollars

Accommodation:....................................$885
Food:.....................................................$378
Transport:..............................................$420
Extras:...................................................$620
TOTAL:...................................................$2303

Per day for 2 pax:...................................$110

Chilean “odds” from a tourist’s point of view.

  • They have 1.6 lt water bottles (not 1.5lt or 2lt as we are used to seeing)
  • They have packs of 11 cigarettes (and not 10)
  • On inter-city buses, they will stop and pick up street sellers who will ride with us for a few km to sell people food on board! Generally pastry types, fruit, drinks. They get let out when they are done selling!
  • Lovely snack sold on the streets: Empañadas (which is a stuffed pastry w meat of your choice, or cheese, or veggies etc). Delicious but not too be eaten too often – fullll of tasty calories!!
