CUBA – Expenses & Accomodation

For those who plan to visit Cuba one day, this could be useful, similar blogs have helped us work out our budget and accommodation during the planning stages & trip.

CUBA - EXPENSES: 23 Nov to 09 Dec 2009

We spent 17 days in Cuba, staying in Casa Particulars (private homes) which are much cheaper than hotels. We often ate at our casas as the local restaurants in some of the towns were really poor. Eating meals in a Casa were usually slightly more expensive than at a restaurant but more food was served.
We ate light, cheap lunches to help save our dollar.

The “Transport” part includes taxis and Viazul buses (rather than local buses) to other cities.

The “Extras” part ranged from hiring scooters to day trips to the beach etc.

All amounts are in US dollars

TOTAL :....................$1669

Per day for 2 pax :.....$98

CUBA - ACCOMODATION: 23 Nov to 09 Dec 2009

All “Casas particulares” offered a dinner option at around 7/8 CUC.
All rooms we stayed in were basic but clean.

  • *TIP: To reserve your next Casa, ask the one you are in to ring and reserve the next one for you, they will be happy to - as they don’t all have internet***

Tourist Observations that stood out for us:

  • The Cuban use 2 currencies – The Convertible Peso and the Cuban National Peso
  • To greet their friends and relatives they kiss 3 times on ONE cheek.
  • Toilet paper is a rare commodity, and each time one has to ask for some in public places.
  • They love Laura Pausini (Italian singer).
  • They have timers at their traffic lights, to indicate how long you have until the lights change again.

A couple of Cuban begging lines that made us laugh:
“One Euro for my coin collection?”
“A donation to fix my shoes?”
